How Excel Helps Marketing Managers

May 10, 2007 | Anita Campbell

Excel for Marketing ManagersIn my last two posts I showed you some ways to find information about the small business market using government data.

Once you download that data into an Excel spreadsheet, then it’s time to bring out the big guns of Excel — the pivot tables.

Pivot tables in Excel help you slice and dice data in many different ways, without having to re-key data into a lot of different tabs or views.

On my radio show last year I interviewed Ivana Taylor and Bill Jelen, who is known as “Mr. Excel.”  They are the authors of the book, Excel for Marketing Managers.   One of the points from their book that they emphasized on the show is the power of pivot tables  for marketers.

I won’t bore you will a lot of details about pivot tables here.  If you are not familiar with pivot tables, this would be a good time to take a free online tutorial. Or you could hire a freelancer to set up pivot tables for you.  Or check out Ivana’s and Bill’s book.

Whatever you decide to do, pivot tables help you make better use of government data for tackling the small business market.

Thanks for the link to the pivot table tutorial! I have been needing to learn how to do these for a long time.

Another good function in excel, at least for me, has been the VLOOKUP feature… it’s particularly helpful in my line of work when dealing with PPC campaign organization & lists.
